What is a font license?

A font license grants you the right to use, (but not own) a typeface for a one-time cost in particular situations covered in the contract. These licenses are constructed around a variety of parameters informed by the context of use such as the media type (print, web, etc.), number of users, or size of the client. During the checkout process, we’ll ask you to input these parameters to help us construct an accurate license (and fee) for your needs. Don’t worry, we’ve tried to make the whole thing as painless as possible. If you really want to get into it, all details of a font license can be found in the EULA…feel free to give it a read. By downloading and installing our typefaces you automatically consent to the conditions in the EULA (don’t worry this is pretty standard across any foundry). I’m a designer working for a client. Who buys the license and who owns it?

If you (as a designer) are working on a project for a client, the client is the license holder. You are covered to use the typeface under this license. You can either have your client purchase the font license, or you can purchase it on their behalf and work out compensation between the two of you. 

Can a license be transferred to a different license holder or used for a different purpose after purchase?

Because licenses are built around a specific set of circumstances they cannot be transferred or used for purposes other than initially specified. We do however offer license upgrades that allow you to adjust the parameters of your license after purchase. License upgrades can be made from your user profile (see next question).

Can I upgrade my license?

Yes, we’ve tried to make this as easy as possible for you, PLUS upgrades are only a fraction of the cost of the original license. To upgrade a license go to the purchases section in your user profile and click “Upgrade” next to the font.  Follow the steps in the checkout process for the appropriate upgrade.

How do I know which license to buy?

Knowing what license to buy has always been a bit tricky, so we’ve done our best to provide options streamlined for a range of design projects. There are two ways to license our fonts: Packages and Custom Licenses. 

Our license packages are ideal for projects in which the font will be used across a variety of media such as a campaign that includes printed materials, a website, and social media posts. We created these packages understanding that today design projects often involve a suite of online and offline components, and wanted to create a robust licensing option at a discounted price.  Packages come in S, M, and L sizes and should be chosen based on the scale and scope of your project. For anything larger than a Large license, please contact us directly.

If you intend on using our fonts for only one media type, than a Custom License is best. Select which type (print, website, or social media) and fill in the parameters based on the size and scope of your project.

What currency are prices calculated in?

Our prices are calculatd in Euros. Be aware that online currency conversion tools might use different rates than credit card companies and thus actual prices may vary on the final invoice.

What is VAT and why do you charge it?

VAT is “Value Added Tax” and is only charged to customers in Switzerland. All prices on our site our exclusive of VAT. Orders from within Switzerland are charged 7.7% VAT on top of the listed price.

What payment methods to you accept?

We accept credit cards, PayPal, and bank transfer. To pay with a bank transfer you will need to reach out to us directly here. Regardless of payment method, you will receive an invoice from us in an email upon purchase.

Do you offer refunds or returns on typefaces?

Generally no, sorry! If you purchased the wrong font by mistake and need to quickly swap it out then you can email us with the order number and we’ll see what we can do (no promises though). Additionally if you encounter any technical errors reach out to us and we’ll do our best to get things working smoothly for you. 

Do you offer student or NGO discounts?

We do. Just choose the Student License Package in checkout to receive 50% off on your fonts. Be aware that a Student License can only be used for non-commercial work. If at any point the work is repurposed for a commercial project, a standard license must be purchased. 

Do you offer trial licenses?

Yes! Trial fonts come with a limited character set, general A-Z, a-z, and 0-9. They can be downloaded for free from the specific typeface page in the credits and PDF specimen area. If you choose to use the font in the final project (and we hope you do!) you will need to purchase a commercial license from our Typefaces page.

My client is interested in a custom font, is that something you do?

Yes! We’ve done custom fonts for clients such as AnOther Magazine, Documenta, Tanya Leighton Gallery, the Rijksacademie, and several books and publications. We’d love to work with you on a custom font project. Just send us an email and tell us a bit about the project and we’ll get back to you with more details.

Can I modify a typeface and re-export it?

No, but we appreciate you asking! We put a lot of time and work into making sure our typefaces are in the best possible shape. If you’d like to customize an aspect of a typeface then send us an email and we can provide a quote.

Are there any situations where your fonts are prohibited for use?

Generally, we consider ourselves good, kind, loving people and we hope that our fonts get used by and for similar people. Some areas like politics get especially tricky and we’d like to keep our fonts out of this mess. In general our fonts are prohibited in any situation that promotes inequality, discrimination, violence, or abuse. Be a good person, use fonts wisely. 

Do you accept typeface submissions?

We do, please send us a PDF of the character set in addition to any background information on the font. We will carefully review with our team and reply if we’d like to move forward with the project.

We collect and process personal data carefully and only to the extent permitted by law. In the following we explain which policies we comply with and for what purpose we collect and process personal data via this website and other websites and applications operated by us or affiliated companies.

When you register and use our services, we collect certain personal data so that we can provide our services targeted to you. Within the scope of communication and data collection, the following data is stored by us or by third party companies that provide the corresponding services:mRegistration data, data that you have shared with social media services for sharing with the company, activity data, in the case of invitations to enter in connection with competitions and other special offers, we may collect further data, in accordance with the relevant invitation to enter, if you have registered for a newsletter, we will keep you informed about relevant developments and offers. If you are directed to our websites via a link in the newsletter, you also grant us permission to process and use your IP address together with geodata, web beacons or similar technologies in order to check whether the offers submitted to you in the course of this communication meet your requirements. In addition, we process and use the e-mail address you provide to send you personalised offers in connection with the newsletter. If you no longer wish to receive the newsletter, you can unsubscribe at any time in the newsletter itself, we do not collect any financial data from external service providers in the field of payments.

The purpose of this data capture is to communicate with you, to provide the business services and functions, to give you the opportunity to comment on content, to minimize the risk of fraud, to be able to provide and improve our services in a contractual and targeted manner, the use of the data for marketing purposes, the use for research purposes, for example to develop new products and services, to comply with applicable legislation and case law and to be able to respond to requests from administrative or other state authorities, to provide the possibility of sharing on social media, to protect the company and third parties.

In the context of the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) regulations apply which may also be applicable to companies and service providers domiciled in Switzerland. As far as these provisions may be relevant for us, we comply with these provisions. The most important of these rights are listed below. Transfer of data to third parties: We are entitled to pass on your personal data to service providers for the purposes of the contract, including abroad. These are, for example, cloud service providers, other companies in the group, other providers of services relevant to the provision of corporate services, including, for example, IT service providers, management consultants and lawyers, and public authorities. These third parties are also obliged to comply with the legal provisions on data protection. A complete list of the data processors involved can be requested from us. 

The central aspects of these legal guidelines are listed below:

Right to information 

Where personal data are collected, the data subjects are to be provided with a range of information regarding the collection of data, in particular what data are collected and for what purpose.

Right of access by the data subject 

According to the GDPR, the person affected by the data processing is entitled to demand a confirmation that personal data are processed by him or that this is not the case. Where data is processed, the GDPR establishes various rights (e.g. the right to obtain a copy of the data).

Right to rectification 

The data subject shall have the right to request the controller to rectify any inaccurate personal data concerning him/her without delay. Taking into account the purposes of the processing, the data subject has the right to request the completion of incomplete personal data, including by means of a supplementary declaration.

Right to erasure (“right to be forgotten”) 

The data subject has the right to request that personal data relating to him/her be deleted immediately and the personal data must be deleted immediately if one of the reasons listed in the GDPR applies, for example that the data are no longer necessary for the purpose for which they were collected.

Right to restriction of processing 

In certain cases, the data subject has the right to require the GDPR to restrict the processing of data. If such a restriction is requested, the data may only be retained, but may no longer be processed.

Right of notification 

According to the GDPR, all recipients to whom personal data have been disclosed must be informed of any correction or deletion of personal data or any restriction on processing, unless this proves impossible or involves disproportionate effort.

Right to data transferability 

The data subject has the right to receive the data that he has provided in a structured, common and machine-readable format and has the right to transfer this data to another data controller, for example to change the service provider. However, this right can only be exercised if the data processing is based on the consent of the data subject or on a contract.

Right to object 

The data subject shall also have the right to object at any time, for reasons arising from his or her particular situation, to certain processing of personal data relating to him or her, including profiling based on these provisions. Subsequently, the data may no longer be processed, unless the data processor can prove compelling reasons for the processing which are worthy of protection and which outweigh the interests, rights and freedoms of the data subject, or the processing serves to assert, exercise or defend legal claims. Where personal data are processed for direct marketing purposes, the data subject shall have the right to object at any time to the processing of personal data concerning him/her for the purposes of such advertising, including profiling in so far as it is related to such direct marketing.

Right to waive an automated decision in individual cases 

In addition, the data subject has the right not to be subject to a decision based exclusively on automated processing, including profiling, which has legal effect against him or her or significantly affects him or her in a similar manner.

Right to be informed of data protection violations 

Should the provisions on the protection of personal data be violated, the person affected by the violation will be informed, provided that this entails a high risk for personal rights and freedoms. 

Special protection for children

Furthermore, the GDPR also provides special protection for children. For example, in the case of services offered directly to a child, consent to the processing of the child’s data must be given or authorised by the holder of parental responsibility, whereby the age limit in question may be defined differently in the various countries within the scope of application of the GDPR.

Technical measures for data security

We protect personal data through appropriate technical and organisational security measures and store them on secure servers. The website is protected against manipulation by the usual state-of-the-art measures and against access, modification or distribution by unauthorised persons. This includes taking data protection aspects into account as early as the planning phase of our services (“privacy by design”), and our new products or services are offered with data protection-friendly default settings (“privacy by default”).

Third-party software is integrated on our website and applications. This is done in particular with the purpose of better understanding the interests of the user and for targeted communication, especially for marketing purposes. Below supplementary information on the corresponding third-party applications:

The website works with Matomo, an open-source web analysis service. Matomo uses cookies, i.e. text files stored on the computer, to analyse the use of the website by the user. The cookie information about this website usage (including the associated IP address) is forwarded to servers that may be located outside Switzerland, and stored there. This information can be used to evaluate the website, to generate reports on website activity for website operators and to provide other services in the area of websites and internet usage. Such information may also be shared with third parties where required to do so by law or where the information is processed by third parties. The installation of cookies can be prevented by a corresponding browser setting, however, in this case certain website functions may not be able to be used in full. By using the website, the user agrees to the aforementioned data processing for the aforementioned purposes. The collected information may be self-hosted or cloud-hosted. For payment transaction, the payment services of Stripe, Inc., San Francisco, USA, are used. The only information we provide to Stripe is the customers e-mail address and the total purchase price. To provide its services, Stripe collects more data. The Privacy Policy of Stripe can be found here.

We have no influence on the content of external websites that are accessible via links on our website. We therefore accept no responsibility for the content of these external websites. The respective provider or operator of the sites is always responsible for the content of the linked sites. The linked sites were checked for possible legal violations at the time of linking. Illegal contents were not identifiable at the time of linking. However, a permanent control of the contents of the linked pages is not reasonable without concrete evidence of a violation of the law. We will remove such links as soon as we become aware of any infringements.
