Air Quotes by Lars Hoie
Air Quotes
By Lars Hoie

The first use of “air quotes dates” back as early as the 1920s but were not officially named as such until an article in a 1989 issue of Spy Magazine. What began as a niche gesture to cite one’s sources in conversation, has since evolved in the comedy and political spheres as a tool for sarcasm and derision. Lars Hoie’s ongoing collection demonstrates how ubiquitous the device has become across an array of popular cultures, surpassing meme-status to become one of the iconic gestures of our time.

White Albums
By Rutherford Chang

Since 2006, Rutherford Chang has amassed nearly 3,000 copies of The Beatles’ White Album (1968). The original cover designed by Richard Hamilton has become an iconic work of stark minimalism featuring only the band name (blind embossed) and a unique edition number. Chang began collecting White Albums fascinated with how the serialized packaging accumulates the unique traces of each owner. Over time, the blank canvas becomes adorned with illustrations, notes, and wear and tear, transforming each record into a visual account of its own past.
